Dental Implant Failure
Saturday, November 8th, 2008As life-changing as the dental implant procedure can be, it does come bundled with the prospect of failure. Dental implant failure, while uncommon given that a patient seeks the services of a competent dental implant dentist, does happen. One of the reasons dental implant failure can come about is a bacteria-ridden jawbone. Some patients have bacteria lying around the jawbone prior to dental implant surgery. When the dental implant dentist prepares the implant site and inserts the implant, the bacteria is agitated and allowed to penetrate the bone and surrounding gums. This is when dental implants problems begin appearing.
Patients that have received multiple implants need not worry that one dental implant failure could be indicative of more in the future. Given that the other dental implants were inserted in a portion of the jawbone not riddled with bacteria, there is absolutely nothing to worry about. No dental implants problems should appear as the implant should fuse correctly with the jawbone. Implants inserted in the bacteria infested jawbone, however, might trigger dental implant pain and eventually implant failure.
At times, the patient’s jawbone isn’t even to blame for dental implant failure. Improper sanitizing of the dental implants before insertion can cause dental implant failure. Although implant manufacturers are forced to ensure their dental implants are properly sanitized before shipment, the implants can become contaminated with bacteria at the implant dentist’ office or during the implant procedure. Implant material is usually not an underlying cause of dental implant failure as almost all implants are manufactured of titanium, a material that does not trigger any adverse bodily reactions when used in the mouth.
One can take some steps to reduce the possibility of dental implant failure. One such step entails contacting your dentist if shortly after your procedure you begin to experience significant dental implant pain and/or bleeding. These are signs of a problematic implant.
It is especially important that implant patients carefully abide by their dentist’s directions in terms of maintaining their implants in both a short and long term sense. Patients that follow directions yet experience dental implant pain should be quick to contact their dentist. Don’t try to resolve the dental implant pain yourself – you could cause even more problems.
Dental implant problems can finally stem from error on behalf of the dentist. If a dentist inserts an implant improperly, it is doomed to fail if sufficient load is applied to it. It may even fracture the bone if the load is severe enough. If you have reason to suspect your implant has been improperly placed, you should see your dentist immediately.
